It’s a hundred years this year since the Great Kantō earthquake of 1923 shook the Kantō region in Japan.

It’s also a hundred years since, in the earthquake’s aftermath, people in the region committed the Kantō Massacre. During the massacre, vigilantes—spurred on by rumours, racist hatred, and aided by police and government authorities—murdered an estimated 6,000 people of Korean descent, as well as non-Korean Japanese communists, socialists, and anarchists.

In tonight’s screening, you’ll get archival footage from the destruction at the time, and will be able to do some digging into historical awareness and responsibility around the massacre.

The provolol admin team decides to step out onto the street and join a protest against the communication blackout that the terrorist apartheid state of Israel has imposed upon Gaza, Palestine

We had planned to screen three pieces of Palestinian cinema tonight. However, it’s emerged that Israel has destroyed all phone and internet connections in Gaza, causing a full communication blackout. This is atrocious. Cutting communication will leave people in Palestine with even fewer options to report on their situation and the war crimes that Israel is committing to the rest of the world.

As such, your dutiful provolol admin team decided that instead of running our pre-planned programme, they’ll go out onto the street tonight and join a protest. They’ll try to do a live radio stream from the protest.

Let’s postpone the Palestinian film programme to next week, 3 November 2023.
